The Mumbai Indians have secured their sixth victory in the 2021 IPL after thrashing the Rajasthan Royals by 8 wickets in Sharjah! Mumbai won the toss and elected to have a bowl first in this contest, a decision which appeared to have paid off quite sensationally during the opening exchanges as the irrepressible Antipodean seam duo of Nathan Coulter-Nile (4/14) and Jimmy Neesham (3/12) scythed through the Royals’ dangerous top-middle order quintet of Yashasvi Jaiswal (12), Evin Lewis (24), Sanju Samson (3), Shivam Dube (3) and Glenn Phillips (4) within the first 10 overs of the innings to leave the shell-shocked men in pink floundering on a truly dire score of 50/5. To their credit, the steely sixth wicket pairing of David Miller (15) and Rahul Tewatia (12) did try valiantly to salvage their side’s faltering innings after this woeful start with their battling 21 run partnership together but as soon as the latter was dismissed by the unstoppable Neesham at the end of the 15th over, any hopes of the Royals posting a substantial total in Sharjah tonight soon began to fade as the clinical Mumbai bowling attack kept things tight brilliantly and took a quick flurry of wickets towards the death to ultimately restrict the men in pink to an extremely underwhelming total of 90/9 from their 20 overs.
In response to this albeit modest batting display from the Royals, Mumbai got off to a rather solid start to their run chase as the classy opening pairing of Rohit Sharma (22) and Ishan Kishan (50*) applied themselves well and produced a valuable 23 run partnership together from the first 18 balls of the chase to take the defending champions up to a seemingly promising score of 23/0 in the 3rd over of their innings. Unfortunately for Mumbai, this budding opening stand was brought to a somewhat abrupt halt when the imperious Sharma was sent back to the pavilion by seamer Chetan Sakariya (1/36) but to the immense relief of the defending champions, this setback would have absolutely no impact on the aforementioned Kishan tonight as the explosive opening batsman continued to wreak total havoc at the top of the order and unleashed a truly brutal barrage of fours and sixes to each and every single corner of Sharjah Stadium to swiftly extinguish any chances of a win for the Royals in this contest and ultimately take the mighty men in blue to a comprehensive 8 wicket victory with a staggering 70 balls of their innings still to spare. As always, well played to both sides out there tonight and congratulations to Mumbai for sealing the 6th win of the 2021 IPL
